libro, The Company Of Critics: Social Criticsm And Political Commitment
In The Twentieth Century:
Complaint is one of the elementary forms of self-assertion, and
the response to complaint is one of the elementary forms of mutual
recognition. When what is at issue is not existence itself but social
existence, being-for-others, then complaint is proof enough: I
complain, therefore I am. We discuss the complaint, therefore we are.
And just as Descartes's Cogito is not the end of cogitation-as if he
had said that having demonstrated his existence by thinking, he could
now exist without further thought-but rather the very beginning, so "I
complain" is only the beginning of the history of complaint. In the
course of social existence, the practice of complaining is steadily
elaborated-in satire, polemic, exhortation, indictment, prophecy, and
countless other common and specialized ways.
